A fun, wholesome night out can be just what the doctor ordered for a family in need of getting connected again. However, this can get a bit pricey. So what can you do indoors that everyone will enjoy, from ages one to ninety-nine? How about a good old-fashioned family movie night!
In today’s economy, families may be cutting back on frivolous expenses and the first thing to generally go is entertainment. However, there are loads of activities that can bring a family together for the evening that hardly cost a thing. Just look on your movie shelf and there’s a whole realm of possibilities! Here are some tips on creating a great and memorable movie night for you and your kids.
Choosing the Right Movie
Though your movie collection may contain a plethora of movies, a good solid genre that the whole family will enjoy on a night in is a family movie. A well-crafted family movie like Toy story 3 will not only entertain children, but adults as well. They are non-offensive, wholesome, and entertaining and can range from the comedic realm to fantasy, adventure, musical, or the like. So take inventory on what genre sparks your family’s interest and make a democratic decision on what movie you will watch. If there is discrepancy between the type of movie to watch, settle with a compromise and watch one genre one month and another genre the next.
Set the Mood
We all know what the best setting is for viewing a movie is: a dim/dark room with space to be comfortable. So do just that in your home! Make sure everyone has a comfortable seat around the boob-tube and the lighting (if there is any) doesn’t create glare off of the screen or shines in anyone’s eyes. I recommend picking up the room so that it is uncluttered and you can focus on your loved ones and the film. If you don’t have enough room on the couch or La-Z-Boy for everyone, throw some big comfy pillows or bean bag chairs on the floor and take a seat. And, as it is a staple in our house, make sure to have a big bucket of popcorn or other delicious snacks the family can share.
Other Activities
Your time together as a family doesn’t have to be limited to strictly watching the chosen family film. Why not have the kids make dinner that night, or make it as a family? Working as a team always increases closeness. You can also have a time
after the movie where you share your favorite scenes, characters, or describe what you got out of the movie (i.e. life lessons or special messages).
Whichever family movie you choose for family movie night, make sure to make it a tradition, for it’s a great time your children are sure to remember well into adulthood. Bonding and learning take place through time spent together, and this time together is a great way to build it!
